# In Fig. 8.13, find tan P – cot R.

**Solution:**

We use the basic formula for tan and cot to solve the question.

Now, here, we have hypotenuse PR = 13 cm, and side PQ = 12 cm.

Now, from the pythagoras theorem, we have

PQ^{2} + QR^{2} = PR^{2}

So, we have,

QR = √(PR^{2} - QR^{2})

= √(13^{2} - 12^{2})

= √25 = 5 cm

We know that, cot R = adjacent side of ∠R / opposite side of ∠R

tan P = opposite side of ∠P / adjacent side of ∠P

Hence, we have cot R = QR/PQ = 5/12

Also, tan P = QR/PQ = 5/12

So, tan P - cot R = 5/12 - 5/12 = 0
