What are Even and Odd Numbers?
An even number is defined as a number that can be divided into two equal groups. On the other hand, an odd number is defined as a number that cannot be divided into two equal groups.
Even and odd numbers can also be characterized as:
 Even Number: A number that is divisible by 2, leaving 0 as the remainder is called an even number.
 Odd Number: A number that is not divisible by 2 and leaves 1 as the remainder is called an odd number.

 The set of even numbers is represented as {x : x = 2k where k ∈ W}, where k is an integer and 'W' is the set of whole numbers.
 The set of odd numbers is represented as {x : x = 2k – 1 where k ∈ N}, where 'k' is an integer and 'N' is the set of natural numbers.

Example 1: Ron had 40 balls in all. He gave 29 balls to his friend. Check if the number of balls left with him are even or odd in number.
Solution:
Ron gave 29 out of 40 balls, so he had 11 balls left with him because 40  29 = 11. Using the properties of even and odd numbers we can conclude that since 11 cannot make equal pairs of 2, it is an odd number.

Example 2: Determine whether 903 is an odd number or not.
Solution:
Using the properties of even and odd numbers, let us divide the given number 903 by 2. We get the remainder as 1 which proves that 903 is an odd number.
