By what number should (- 4)⁵ be divided so that the quotient may be equal to (- 4)³?
Solution:
Given, (-4)⁵ is divided by a number.
We have to find the number so the quotient may be equal to (-4)³
Let the number be x
So, (-4)⁵/x = (-4)³
On rearranging,
x = (-4)⁵/(-4)³
For any non-zero integers ‘a’ and ‘b’ and whole numbers m and n,
am ÷ an = am-n
Here, a = -4, m = 5 and n = 3
m - n = 5 - 3 = 2
am-n = (-4)²
x = (-4)²
Therefore, x = 16
