With the decrease in prices of tea by 15% Tonu, the chaiwallah, was able to buy 2 kg more of tea with the same Rs 45 that he spent each month on buying tea leaves for his chai shop. What was the reduced price of tea? What was the original price of tea

Solution:

Let the original price of tea = Rs. x/Kg

Therefore the amount of tea that can be purchased with Rs. 45 = 45/x Kg

When the price is reduced by 15 percentage means that the new price is 0.85x

If with the reduced price the chaiwala is able to buy 2 kg more we can write:

45/0.85x - 45/x = 2

45/0.85 - 45 = 2x

45[1/0.85 - 1] = 2x

45[1 - 0.85]/0.85 = 2x

45[0.15]/0.85 = 2x

45(3/17) = 2x

x = 45 × 3/(17 × 2) = Rs 135/34/kg = Rs.3.97/Kg

The reduced price of tea is

= 0.85[135/34]

= 0.05[(45 × 3)/2]

= Rs. 3.375/kg

When the price is reduced by 25% means that the new price is 0.75x

If with the reduced price the chaiwala is able to buy 2 kg more we can write:

90/0.0.75x - 90/x = 2

120 - 90 = 2x

30 = 2x

x = Rs. 15/kg

The reduced price of tea is

= 0.75[15]

= Rs. 11.25/kg

The original price of tea was Rs. 15/kg
