**Solution:**

In right angled triangle BAC, AB = 5 cm, BC = 13 cm and AC = 12 cm.

Area of triangle BAC = 1/2 × Base × Height

= 1/2 × 5 cm × 12 cm

= 30 cm^{2}

Area of triangle ABC = 1/2 × Base × Height

Now BC = 13 cm

30 cm^{2 }= 1/2 × 13 cm × AD

AD = (30 cm^{2 }× 2) / 13 cm

AD = 60 cm^{2} / 13 cm

AD = 4.61 cm
